This is the final regular season game for the Atlanta Falcons in the Georgia Dome. For those of us who basically grew up with the Georgia Dome as the team’s stadium, it’s kind of a weird day.
The Georgia Dome opened up on September 6, 1992, and gave the team a good 15 years, which seems like no time at all. It will be replaced next year by the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which is currently looming over the rest of Atlanta while construction crews work to complete it. The Dome played host to some very memorable games over the years, particularly in the playoffs, but a win over the hated Saints today would be a pretty sweet way to end the regular season in the stadium for all time.
As D. Orlando Ledbetter has noted, too, there will be several former players in attendance, including Michael Vick. We’ve gotten absolutely zero confirmation from the team that the team’s former electric quarterback will be in attendance, and there’s been no publicly-circulated list of which players are actually going to show up, so I guess we’ll get to be surprised.
The thing that matters the most? A Falcons win today, and the fact that this won’t be the final game in the Georgia Dome, because Atlanta will draw at least one home game in the postseason. Good way to send the dome out, I think.
