The Falcons are fresh off an impressive road win against Oakland, while the Saints have dropped two straight to start the season and have struggled on offense and defense, respectively, while doing so. I’m not saying the Falcons should be a strong favorite, but I’m a little surprised to see them open up as 3.5 point underdogs.
Recent history is working against the Falcons here, as they’ve been inept against New Orleans for a little while now, and lost both games a year ago. Primetime matchups have also tended to favor the Saints, for whatever reason, so Vegas expecting New Orleans to win isn’t completely unreasonable.
It won’t surprise you to learn that I think this is a winnable game for Atlanta. The Saints have shown through two games that they are capable of stretches of brilliance, even with their current roster, but Atlanta can keep up with them scoring-wise (as they showed us against Oakland) and their defense is less capable of a pass rush but much more capable of stopping a stiff breeze.
This being a Falcons-Saints game, all bets should be off regardless. We’ll hope the Falcons can pull off the upset on Monday Night Football.
