One of Atlanta's most surprising preseason players was easily RB Brandon Wilds. The former South Carolina star went undrafted thanks to a slew of college injuries, but had nice speed and looked to be a good fit for the Falcons. However, he doesn't play special teams and has another nagging injury.
ESPN's Vaughn McClure throws out an option for the back.
Ward has played 12 different positions on special teams, including returner. That's his edge for the No. 3 RB spot over rookie Brandon Wilds, who could be an IR candidate with an LCL knee sprain.
It will be hard to push Ward off of the roster when Wilds isn't healthy. Plus the Falcons would need another special teams player, and Wilds does not play special teams. On their way to cut 22 players, stashing Wilds on injured reserve and letting him pick up next year looks like the best decision for the player and the team.
Final cuts are coming soon, so stay tuned to see what roster moves the team makes.
