The final preseason game doesn't bring much excitement in terms of quality, but there are some headlines to be found. For many, this is the last shot to prove they should start, or even belong on a team with 52 of their peers. Let's take a quick look at who we're keeping an eye on this Thursday night.
Dashon Goldson, Safety
With Keanu Neal out several weeks and Kemal Ishmael coming off an injury, it's up to newly signed Dashon Goldson to step in as our starting strong safety versus Jacksonville. Falcons fans may remember Goldson from the 2012 NFC Championship, where the 49ers did some things that I'm just not comfortable talking about yet. Thursday should give us a little insight on how well he fits in Quinn's scheme.
Matt Schaub/Matt Simms, Quarterback
A battle for the ages. Matt Schaub and Matt Simms will duke it out for the right to be the official backup to Matt Ryan for the first regular season game. It might not be just a contest for the depth charts either. The team could choose to carry only one, so their performances could determine if they're still with the team next week.
Sean Weatherspoon, Linebacker
I wouldn't say that De'Vondre Campbell is the default starter on Week One just yet. Weatherspoon has shown flashes of his old self at several points throughout the preseason. With the alternative being a first-year, albeit impressive, 4th round linebacker, the coaching staff could feel more comfortable going with the veteran.
Who do you've got on the radar for this week?
