Atlanta-Washington preseason Week 1: Who lead the series history?

Washington has the all-time edge, but Atlanta has been better of late.

NFL: Washington Redskins at Atlanta Falcons Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

We like to see how the Falcons have fared against their weekly opponent stretching back into Atlanta’s 50 year history, but it isn’t always pretty. This is one of those times.

Unfortunately, Washington leads the all-time series 15-9-1. You’ll recall that this was once one of the better teams in the NFL, with some all-time greats and multiple Super Bowl victories under their collective franchise belts. They haven’t been nearly that good in recent years, however.

Highlights

  • Atlanta has won the last five matchups of these two teams, stretching back to 2006. The last time the Falcons lost a regular season game to Washington, it was 2003.
  • The Falcons’ most memorable loss was in the 1991 playoffs. Fresh off a victory over the Saints, Atlanta was embarrassed 24-7 on the road to the eventual Super Bowl champion.
  • Last year, the Falcons showed some of the first cracks that would ultimately doom their 2015 season in a game against Washington, but they ultimately won in overtime thanks to a timely turnover.
