Falcons OTAs: Notes from the second day of the second week

The Atlanta Falcons got together again for some organized team activities. What happened?

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

The Falcons rolled through a second day of OTAs for the second week, and while there wasn't a ton going on today, there's enough for us to round it up. Round it up, we shall.

Devonta Freeman returning kicks, too

Yesterday, we mentioned that Tevin Coleman was returning kicks in OTAs, which was intriguing given his speed. It looks like he wasn't the only running back doing so.

The Pro Bowler isn't likely to fulfill those duties once the regular season comes around, so don't read too much into it. Freeman simply was asked to be one of the returners for a segment of practice during which special teams coach Keith Armstrong emphasized spacing for his blockers. Freeman was first up, followed by fellow running back Tevin Coleman and receiver Mohamed Sanu.

It is possible that the loser of the running back battle will ultimately take on kick return duties, but Devin Hester would need to be cut, Devin Fuller would need to recover slowly and not make an impression, and Eric Weems (an experienced returner) might have to not make the team, too. It's probably fair to pump the brakes

No Dwight Freeney

As we noted yesterday, the Falcons aren't signing Dwight Freeney right now. The "right now" may end up being an important qualifier, or it may not, which has been one of the more frustrating subplots of this Falcons offseason thus far.

It's good for the Falcons to have a list of players they might consider signing later in the summer if injury strikes, and it's certainly possible that Freeney will linger in free agency well into the summer, given his age. But if the Falcons want to add pass rushing help and legitimately like Freeney, there's no real sense in waiting, given that they're getting more cap space this week, currently have two open roster spots, and still don't figure to have a great pass rush. I'll hope somehow Freeney finds his way onto the team, but at the moment, I'm feeling pretty down on that possible outcome.

What's next?

There are two days of OTAs left, on June 3 and June 6, and then mandatory minicamp from June 14-16. Just a reminder that mandatory minicamp is open to the public, so if you want to head over to Flowery Branch for that, I'd make plans to now.

What are your watching over the next couple of days of OTAs?
