Falcons sign defensive end Derrick Shelby

The 27-year-old defensive end will likely play opposite Vic Beasley in Atlanta.

Robert Duyos-USA TODAY Sports

Derrick Shelby had spent his entire career with the Miami Dolphins, but it appears he'll now be an Atlanta Falcon.

Shelby, 27, had 3.5 sacks last year, which would have hilariously been good for second on the Atlanta Falcons. He's a big, physical end who can set the edge effectively, may still have some upside left untapped, and should provide decent value as a pass rusher. At an average salary of about $4.5 million per year (just $1.4 million of that guaranteed), he'll likely serve as the starter opposite Vic Beasley or one of the top guys in the team's defensive end rotation, potentially kicking inside on passing downs like Adrian Clayborn did this year. It's a solid value signing.

Welcome to Atlanta, Derrick Shelby. May you find much success.
