NFL free agency is fun and exciting, but is it really worth it, Atlanta Falcons fans?

Fact: Arthur Blank wipes his nose with lotion-infused $100 bills

The Atlanta Falcons have a lot of work to do. They're lacking in the personnel department, and that's a good place to start.

The fan base wants action and they want it now. Build through the draft over several years? Sure, that sounds like fun ... said nobody ever. Sign only role players in free agency and keep a comfortable buffer in the bank? Absolutely, that'd be fine ... or not. But wait, is free spending in free agency really worth it in the long run? Does it really pay dividends like we want it to? Per CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora, the answer is an emphatic and resounding "no."

I beg of you, be smart and judicious with how you try to build your team in this next week. There is a very good chance you will end up doing more damage than good. And especially this year -- with an even weaker free-agent class than last year -- and with more cap space to throw around than ever (per the NFLPA the 32 NFL teams have a collective $205,517,903 in cap space at their disposal), this is very dangerous time [...]

Here's the thing: La Canfora isn't wrong, but good luck convincing any fan base that free agents aren't a necessary evil. Not every team can be the Green Bay Packers - it's just not practical. (If you're unfamiliar with the Packers, they infamously draft the vast majority of their roster every year, taking a very conservative, measured approach in free agency.) Strike that, it is practical, and obviously it's possible, but it isn't easily replicated. Nobody, and I mean nobody, wants to spend money when you don't have to.

For the Falcons, free agency is likely to be a mixed bag. Expect a splash signing or two, but also expect Thomas Dimitroff to set aside his patented "rainy day fund." No matter how it plays out, try to keep a level head. Free agency is a tricky beast, and it's hardly an easy solution to all our problems.
