Atlanta Falcons linebacker Sean Weatherspoon once occupied a coveted position in the organization. A respected leader and the defensive face of the franchise, Weatherspoon had it all. But then the injuries happened. And they kept happening.
Weatherspoon's fall from grace was gradual and painful. We expected more, and truth be told, seeing him play for the Cardinals always felt like a nightmare. One year later, he's a Falcon once again. I'm excited, you're excited, we're all excited. But how did he find his way home? Well, as The Mothership's Andrew Hirsh reports, scheme fit played a huge role.
"Looking into those guys' eyes and talking to them about scheme and where they see me fitting in with my skill set, I mean, it just made the most sense," Weatherspoon said of returning to Atlanta. "Like I said, I've been here before. I know this city. I'm grateful to ever be a part of this city and basically come back. I'm just pumped. I'm pumped to go and just do something."
Weatherspoon obviously liked what he heard when he met with the Falcons. (Not a surprise, given that free agency isn't just about contract negotiations.) They led him to believe that he'd play and help them win. Whether he will actually play a significant role in the resurgence of the defense remains to be seen.
