There’s some bad news for Atlanta’s depth in the secondary with today’s injury report. Strong safety Kemal Ishmael is headed to injured reserve with the shoulder injury he suffered on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams.
Julio Jones has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers, which is probably fine considering the relative strength of the Niners’ defense, which isn’t great.
Jalen Collins will also be out on Sunday, and that’s not ideal considering the Falcons are already missing Desmond Trufant. C.J. Goodwin is likely to get the start in Collins’ place, alongside Robert Alford and Brian Poole.
Mohamed Sanu (groin) will play on Sunday. The Falcons have also promoted wide receiver J.D. McKissic from the practice squad, which should help a bit with depth at receiver with Jones out.
When the injury report is officially released this afternoon, we’ll have an update on the remainder of the players on it. At this point, my guess is that De’Vondre Campbell (ribs), Jake Matthews (knee) and Dwight Freeney (non-injury related) will all play on Sunday. I project that Nick Williams (concussion), Robenson Therezie (ankle), and Adrian Clayborn (knee) will all be out against the 49ers.
Update: all of the players I projected will be out are officially out against San Francisco.
