Matt Ryan becomes first player in NFL history to throw for 200 yards in 50 straight games

The Falcons’ quarterback is in the NFL’s record books.

To throw for 200 yards in 50 consecutive games, you have to be durable enough to play in 50 straight games, steady enough to not drop a clunker, and good enough to stay starting and playing at a high level for more than three straight seasons. Matt Ryan checks all the boxes here, even with his lackluster 2015 season.

This is the perfect Matt Ryan streak, in so many ways. He’s always been an intelligent, meticulous quarterback who rarely puts up truly gaudy numbers but always delivers solid-to-good ones. This season has put him firmly in the MVP discussion, as it should, but it was Ryan’s toughness and the pass-first offense he’s led for so long that got him here. I don’t think there’s much debate about Ryan’s place in Falcons history, and he’s going to leave his mark on the NFL record books with this streak, if nothing else. I’m very glad to see that.

Of course, if Ryan played in a very different era of football, he might not have gotten here, but that’s really beside the point. In the midst of his best season, Ryan continues to reach new heights, and isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. He may run this streak to an eye-popping number before this is all said and done.
