Falcons linebacker Sean Weatherspoon has ruptured his right Achilles, according to ESPN’s Vaughn McClure, who obtained that information directly from Spoon. The injury occurred during Atlanta's win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
Weatherspoon was drafted by the Falcons in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft, and he spent four seasons with the Falcons, and his performance was diminished by injuries.
2011 was Weatherspoon’s best season in Atlanta, when he finished the season with 115 tackles, four sacks, eight pass deflections and one fumble recovery.
He missed 10 games due to injuries in 2013, and Weatherspoon ruptured his Achilles prior to the start of the 2014 season, sidelining him for its entirety.
Spoon spent the 2015 season with the Arizona Cardinals, playing in 14 games and contributing 11 tackles. He returned to Atlanta in free agency, and was delighted to be back with the team that had drafted him.
As De’Vondre Campbell continues to be sidelined with an ankle injury, Spoon has filled in admirably. The difference in speed between Weatherspoon and Campbell is noticeable, but Spoon has filled the role effectively and his effort is evident with 23 tackles over four games.
I would be lying if I said I'm not genuinely sad about the severity of Weatherspoon’s injury. We wish him the best in his recovery.
