Sean Weatherspoon’s injury just a handful of games into his return to Atlanta felt profoundly unfair, but the good news is that the veteran linebacker’s surgery was successful.
Surgery went great! Thanks for the prayers and well wishes tweeps! God and Dr. Anderson did their thang yesterday! Time to Climb! #theClimb— Sean Weatherspoon (@SeanWSpoon56) October 11, 2016
Spoon is a former Falcons first round pick who was a quality starter for a time, but a series of injuries has meant he hasn’t played a full season in quite some time. The Falcons brought him back and he got significant playing time with De’Vondre Campbell sidelined, looking decent while doing so, before injury struck again.
Weatherspoon is on injured reserve and isn’t likely to return this year, especially with the Falcons getting De’Vondre Campbell, Deion Jones, and Paul Worrilow back before he’s eligible to return. Hopefully the Falcons can figure out a way to keep him around in some capacity next year, but with a shift toward youth and athleticism at linebacker, it’s not a given.
Either way, we wish Spoon well on his recovery.
