Another game, another victory for the Atlanta Falcons.
The Falcons improved to 4-1 with a decisive 23-16 win over the Denver Broncos.
Last week we took a look at the top matchups to watch. Let’s revisit them.
Falcons cornerbacks versus Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders
Both Robert Alford and Desmond Trufant largely held the Broncos’ wide receivers in check. Sanders led the way with seven receptions for 80 yards and Thomas finished five catches for 49 yards and a three-yard touchdown pass when the game was pretty much in hand. Atlanta’s secondary got a bit of help from a suddenly ferocious Falcons pass rush that sacked Paxton Lynch six times.
Broncos pass rush versus the Falcons offensive line
By and large, the Falcons offensive line passed a huge test. Matt Ryan was sacked just twice. One came from Von Miller, who beat Ryan Schraeder with a spin move, and Shane Ray and Derek Wolfe combined for a sack after Ryan held onto the ball just a bit too long. Overall, it was a pretty good day for the big guys up front.
Devonta Freeman versus the Denver run defense
Atlanta proved Denver has trouble matching up with running backs. Freeman was able to find running room repeatedly as he rushed 23 times for 88 yards and a touchdown. Rarely did the Broncos prevent the Falcons from gaining positive yards on running plays.
