Atlanta Falcons 53 man roster projection and roster bubble, training camp edition

As training camp begins, we deliver a 53 man roster projection.

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Falcons have been at training camp for a few days now, and the roster moves will be coming shortly enough. It's our last chance to do a roster projection before those changes happen, and by golly, we're going to do one.

There won't be many surprises here. I'm projecting a couple of currently injured Falcons to make the final roster after their health improves, and I've got some guy named Julio Jones locking down a spot, if you can believe that.

The entire 53 man roster follows. Share your best projections with us!

So who's on the bubble?

Obviously, if you don't see a player on this list, they're squarely on the roster bubble according to our expert brains. But there are players on this list who aren't assured jobs, and I'd like to run down that list here.

  • Eric Weems. We all love Special Weems, and he's a core special teamer. If the Falcons think a player like Speedy Reedy would be more useful, or if they like the thought of carrying four running backs, Weems is the most logical cut on the offense.
  • Levine Toilolo. This team doesn't need to keep three tight ends, per se, and Toilolo has upside but hasn't shown the team much thus far. If Tony Moeaki is healthy and the Falcons like the blocking ability of their wide receivers and running backs, he could be on the outs.
  • Lamar Holmes. I'm projecting that he'll get healthy in enough time to save his job, particularly because Demarcus Love and Tyler Polumbus are pretty uninspiring options behind the starters. But all it'll take is a slow recovery or Love impressing to knock him off the roster completely, so he's arguably the most tenuous player on the list.
  • Allen Bradford. I'm a Marquis Spruill fan, and so he's on this roster. With Bradford running with the 1's and drawing praise from William Moore, however, it's impossible to leave him off the roster right now. We'll see how things shake out later, though, and whether Joplo Bartu, Tyler Starr, or Spruill can knock him off.
  • Dezmen Southward. He's a holdover from the Mike Smith regime who hasn't shown the team much thus far, and if the conversion project doesn't work, the Falcons could cut bait early.
