Falcons roster cuts: Atlanta trims down to 76 players, place Lamar Holmes on PUP

No real surprises here.

Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

The Falcons have cut their roster down ahead of Tuesday's deadline, per the team.

The Atlanta Falcons today announced that they have waived LB Boris Anyama, WRMarquez Clark, RB Michael Ford, WR John Harris, DT Warren Herring, NTDerrick Hopkins, OT Matt Huffer, CB Michael Lee, G Eric Lefeld, LBTerrell Manning, DE Sam Meredith, and C Valerian Ume-Ezeoke. The club also placed T Lamar Holmes on the Physically Unable to Perform list, and they have also released TE Mickey Shuler.

There are no surprises here. Shuler seemed like he might have an outside shot at a roster spot with the relative weakness at tight end, but he barely got on the field, and the team will roll on with the three they have. Many liked center Valerian Ume-Ezeoke, who could be back when the Falcons populate their practice squad, but it's not a terrific sign for his Falcons future that he was cut now with the team a bit thin on the interior of the offensive line.

Holmes hitting the PUP list isn't particularly surprising, as he's been out with a broken foot, despite his two phantom snaps from the NFL's snap counts for Saturday night's game. We'll have more thoughts on his potential role when tomorrow rolls around, but I anticipate the Falcons keeping around with their frighteningly shallow tackle situation, and this is a clear sign of their interest in doing so.

Thoughts on these cuts?
