2015 Falcons training camp: August 12 tracker and what to watch

Just two days of practice remain before the Titans game.

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

We're about to roll right into the first preseason game, so you could be forgiven for looking forward to that and skimping on the practice coverage. That would be a mistake, however, because we still have much to learn about this football team before the first game.

That's particularly true along the offensive front, where we still don't know who is going to line up with the starting unit on Friday, especially with the team trying out different permutations. Don't expect Jon Asamoah to be among the starters, however, at least for this week.

Here's a few other items of interest for today's practice.

  • Continue to monitor the running backs. Terron Ward is the odds-on favorite to touch the ball first Friday evening, but the team will want an extended look at all their backs with Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman out.
  • Jalen Collins will need to make rapid progress to have a chance of overtaking Robert Alford, so you're looking for keywords like "improvement," "great hustle," and "intercepted the ball so many times Sean Renfree sat down and sulked."
  • Speaking of Renfree, he's got four games to dislodge T.J. Yates from the roster, because I assume the team is only going to keep two quarterbacks on the active list. If the Falcons are serious about opening every position for competition, Renfree's showing in practice and then in games will be very relevant.
