T.J. Yates signs one-year deal, will continue to back up Matt Ryan for Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons will keep their backup quarterback for another year.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Falcons have re-signed T.J. Yates, according to Adam Caplan.

Yates completed three of four passes for 64 yards and an interception against the Buccaneers this last year, but was otherwise glued to the bench as Matt Ryan stayed healthy and frequently abused during the 2014 season. The 27-year-old is a perfectly competent backup who gives the team a  veteran presence behind Matt Ryan, which is entirely unobjectionable. I can't exactly get pumped about the signing, but I understand it, and the money's not bad for a veteran quarterback.

There's always the chance that Sean Renfree beats out Yates—we don't know how much guaranteed money he'll be getting—but it looks likely Yates will be the backup for the second straight year. Welcome back to Atlanta, T...I don't know what his name stands for. Top Jam?
