With free agency looming—looming, I say!—it's time to look at the state of the roster, so we can all understand just how much work lies ahead.
Please note that I am not counting players who finished the season on the practice squad. We'll organize this in a vaguely depth chart sort of way.
QB Matt Ryan Sean Renfree
RB Devonta Freeman Jerome Smith
FB Patrick DiMarco
WR Julio Jones Devin Hester Nick Williams
WR Roddy White
TE Levine Toilolo
LT Jake Matthews Sam Baker
LG Peter Konz Harland Gunn
C Joe Hawley James Stone
RG Jon Asamoah
RT Ryan Schraeder Lamar Holmes
DE Malliciah Goodman Cliff Matthews
DE Stansly Maponga
DT Jonathan Babineaux Ra'Shede Hageman
DT Paul Soliai Tyson Jackson
OLB Prince Shembo Joplo Bartu
MLB Paul Worrilow Nate Stupar
OLB Tyler Starr Marquis Spruill
CB Desmond Trufant Ricardo Allen
CB Robert Alford
FS Dezmen Southward Sean Baker
SS William Moore Kemal Ishmael
K Matt Bryant
P Matt Bosher
LS Josh Harris
Bottom line: The Falcons need starting-caliber players at at least four spots on defense and two on offense, depending on your high hopes for Peter Konz and/or Harland Gunn. It'll take a deft blend of free agent acquisitions and draft picks to fill all the holes, and we'll have to hope that the front office and Dan Quinn are deft hands, indeed.
