Report: Blaine Gabbert will start Sunday versus the Falcons

New, comments

Hoo boy.

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Things were not going well for Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers, and it appears they're not going to get better anytime soon.

Plugged-in reporter Kyle McLorg says that Colin Kaepernick will be benched this weekend. You know what that means.

I cannot stress what a white flag this is. Kaepernick had looked abysmal, but his receiving options are pretty weak, his line is a mess, and the entire organization looks lost and dysfunctional from top to bottom. I'm not sure there's a quarterback in the NFL who could be truly successful for this 49ers team, and as talented as he is, Kap wasn't. He looked shellshocked a week ago.

He's being replaced by a man with a 66.8 career passer rater, more interceptions than touchdowns, and the same offense around him, minus the usually reliable Vernon Davis. That is not a recipe for success, and one suspects the 49ers are chasing their quarterback of the future with this move.

It's possible that Blaine Gabbert will dig deep and deliver an impressive performance, but with a weak roster around him and a coach who appears to be in way over his head, that seems unlikely. Upgrade the Falcons' defense accordingly, if you're a fantasy player, and lick your chops if you're not. This is the best possible matchup for Atlanta to walk into.
