Falcons fans seem to be pretty split on Josh McDaniels in terms of whether or not he's a good fit for the Falcons. He's had a great deal of success as an offensive coordinator, but in his first, and only, stint as a head coach, McDaniels is best-remembered for drafting Tim Tebow in the first round and not keeping a head coaching job for a particularly long time.
Obviously, Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff, as well as Scott Pioli, have close ties to McDaniels from their days with the Patriots, and with Dimitroff's position not sounding entirely secure at the present, it stands to reason that those guys would be angling hard for McDaniels to win the vacant head coaching position in Atlanta. McDaniels did interview with the Falcons last Friday for the position, but Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal is reporting that McDaniels viewed this as just a preliminary talk.
Per Daniels, McDaniels emphasized that he had "moved on" from the interviews in order to get his offense ready to take on the Ravens in the divisional round this weekend, and when he was asked whether that meant he was removing his name from consideration in Atlanta and San Francisco, where he interviewed Saturday, McDaniels said, "Honestly, I just had an initial meeting with them. It hasn't really got any farther in either direction."
The last thing a head coach like Bill Belichick wants is a distraction heading into the playoff game, so I'd take all of this with a grain of salt, but it's also not surprising if the organization is being fairly noncommittal at this point. They still have Rex Ryan, Doug Marrone, Todd Bowles and Teryl Austin scheduled to interview this week, and the final decision will ultimately come from Arthur Blank.
