We knew these cuts were coming today, and it makes sense, because now's not the time to keep players around unnecessarily. The Falcons play this Thursday, and they only need to keep the guys that will play this week. Jay Adams has the full list.
The Atlanta Falcons today announced that they have waived defensive end
Theo Agnew , linebacker Brendan Daley, linebackerDarin Drakeford , safetyDevonta Glover-Wright , wide receiverJulian Jones , quarterbackJeff Mathews , linebackerWalker May , running backJerome Smith , wide receiverTramaine Thompson , and tight endBrian Wozniak . The club also placed offensive linemanMike Johnson and linebackerMarquis Spruill on injured reserve, in addition to placing wide receiverDrew Davis and safetyZeke Motta on the Physically Unable to Perform list, and released safetyTyrell Johnson .
There are some notables here. It appears Mike Johnson's injury was pretty serious, and you have to feel for the guy. He's only played in 18 games for the Falcons since 2010, the year they drafted him; not what you'd expect from a 3rd round draft pick. It's also interesting that the Falcons didn't move Zeke Motta to IR - it means they believe he can play this year, albeit in week 7, at the earliest. Other than that, no surprises.
