Two new faces to the Atlanta Falcons will be sitting out part of camp. Coach Mike Smith updated the media, which in case you missed it includes the Falcoholic's very own Jeanna Thomas, about the team's injuries. Dezmen Southward injured his knee and is expected to be out one week while linebacker Pat Angerer is in the league's concussion protocol and has no timetable to return.
Atlanta's third-round selection Southward has been behind Dwight Lowery for the starting free safety spot and seems even more unlikely to beat out the veteran by week 1.
Angerer, signed only nine days ago, is pushing for both a starting spot and a roster spot. The oft-injured veteran was previously diagnosed with a concussion in September of 2013. Expected to compete with standout undrafted free agents Paul Worrilow and Joplo Bartu, Angerer has yet to run with the first team defense. His absence will give Bartu plenty of time to show the coaches he deserves to start.
Hopefully Southward and Angerer can make quick and complete recoveries.
