We reach guard, that stalwart position that has featured Justin Blalock and opposite him a rotating carousel of night terrors. Boy, 2013 was fun!
This year, with the signing of Jon Asamoah, things are looking up. The Falcons may have competent play at both guard spots for a full season for the first time since Harvey Dahl took his anger issues to St. Louis. This is exciting, and obviously much of the team's offensive success, with Sam Baker never a lock to play well/healthy for a full season and a rookie on the right side of the line, is going to depend on these guards.
Here's my projection for the season ahead.
Projected 2014 Guard Depth Chart
LG Justin Blalock
RG Jon Asamoah
Gabe Carimi
Peter Konz
You may remember Carimi from the tackle depth chart. I envision him filling the role once occupied by Garrett Reynolds, Mike Johnson (when healthy), and so on: The guard who can play tackle in a pinch. If Carimi sticks, though, I envision him as the primary backup to Blalock, in particular.
Konz has played guard and center before, checking the versatility box. If the coaching staff feels he has improved enough, they'll likely be comfortable rolling with him in that dual role once more.
Project away, friends.
