Dezmen Southward doesn't have the clout that Desmond Trufant had during his brief holdout prior to 2013's training camp. And yet Southward is the lone member of the Falcons 2014 draft class that hasn't signed. It's not the end of the world, and it certainly doesn't mean anything this far in advance of training camp. But that said, the Falcons aren't fond of contract disputes, and they won't let this linger, because they don't have to, they don't have to let it linger.
What's the hold up? Well, there's no real rush ... Southward will get a four-year deal, too. Based on last year's slot, he should receive close to $700,000 guaranteed to go with base salaries of $420,000 in 2014, $510,000 in 2015, $600,000 in 2016, and $690,000 in 2017. His agent might be trying to angle for a little extra money somewhere.
As McClure points out, this will get done. It's just a matter of time. So rest assured, it won't be long until Southward is ours, all ours!
