The Falcons should land a net full of quality draft picks if they play their cards right, because they're now sitting on a total of 10 selections in the upcoming 2014 NFL Draft. Atlanta receives three compensatory picks this year, including a fourth-rounder and two 7th round selections.
According to Jay Adams, the Falcons add picks No. 139, No. 253 and No. 255 overall. The fourth-round selection comes from the departure of Brent Grimes, who signed with the Dolphins last offseason.
Last year the Falcons received four compensatory picks. They drafted Levine Toilolo, Kemal Ishmael, Zeke Motta and Sean Renfree with those additional selections. Seventh-round picks aren't too appealing to the average fan, but they can continue to add solid depth with the extra picks.
A few things to note about compensatory picks:
- They can't be traded
- Teams can earn a max of four
- Compensatory picks are given at the end of rounds three through seven, depending on unrestricted free agents lost compared to unrestricted free agents signed in the previous offseason.
Jason Snelling and Thomas DeCoud, say what you want about them, were also compensatory picks. The fourth-rounder is a huge plus to an already complete bevy of picks.
