The Atlanta Falcons haven't dominated much of anything this season. But dumb luck has them controlling their destiny heading into week 16. Who'd have guessed that would happen? Not this blogger, that's for sure.
Meanwhile, despite the mediocrity circus that's been the Falcons' 2014 campaign, there's been some noteworthy individual performances. Pro Football Focus released their Pro Bowl selections this week. And while it's not the "Pro Bowl" you're used to hearing about, five Falcons made the roster.
The first selection shouldn't come as a surprise. Matt Ryan is one of 4 quarterback reserves, behind starters Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees. Ryan has done some head scratching stuff this season, but overall, he's turned in another fantastic season. Just think how good he'd be with a durable offensive line and head coach that knows how to properly use timeouts.
Julio Jones is also a reserve, behind starters Antonio Brown, Dez Bryant, Jordy Nelson, and DeMaryius Thomas. Jones is just a freak when healthy, obliterating the competition. You get the sense that he's turned a corner this season and that his best days are ahead of him.
On defense, Desmond Trufant is a reserve behind starters Chris Harris Jr., Vontae Davis, Darrelle Revis, and Richard Sherman. Tru has anchored an otherwise defunct defense. Convert a couple of those tipped balls into interceptions and he'd surely be a starter.
Finally, on special teams, Matt Bryant and Devin Hester are named as starters. What can you say about these two that hasn't been said? Bryant is Mr. Dependable, and it's been fun to watch Hester work. Both men are season veterans, and if all goes according to plan, both men will be back with the Falcons in 2015.
