Falcons OC Dirk Koetter Linked to Raiders Job

There's speculation that Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter could be a candidate for the recently vacated head coaching job in Oakland after the season.

USA TODAY Sports

While there are certainly plenty of things to critique about the Falcons' performance so far in the 2014 NFL season, one constant element has been impressive offensive play. Dirk Koetter has done a nice job this season in general of scheming to players' strengths.

That's why it's not a surprise that Koetter's name is one that's being tossed around regarding the head coaching job in Oakland that just became available when the Raiders fired head coach Dennis Allen on Monday after the team got off to an 0-4 start this season.

Tony Sparano was already named the interim head coach, and depending on the team's performance, he may lock up the job long-term. Jon Gruden's name is in the mix, and Gruden, of course, has a history with the Raiders. But Jason Cole, a NFL insider with Bleacher Report, thinks that Dirk Koetter's name is, and should be, at the top of the Raiders' wish list. Cole cites Koetter's imagination and personality as necessary components for a coach to come in and rebuild the Raiders.

Sparano is set for the remainder of the season, and everything can change between now and January, but if the Falcons' offense continues performing at the level it has been, it's possible that Oakland won't be the only team with Koetter on their radar. What do you think about the possibility of Dirk Koetter transitioning to a head coaching gig?
