One name can be crossed off the tight end depth chart. The Atlanta Falcons reached an injury settlement with Tommy Gallarda on Sunday, according to Jay Adams. D. Orlando Ledbetter initially broke the news of the team parting ways with the 25-year-old tight end.
Gallarda was in the mix for second string behind Tony Gonzalez. The details of his injury have yet to be released, but Atlanta will now focus on Chase Coffman and Levine Toilolo as backups at tight end.
The Falcons also signed tight end Tim Biere. The former Kansas Jayhawk was briefly with the Chiefs last year.
Coffman has received high praise from several sources throughout camp so far. The 2008 John Mackey Award winner (best college tight end) put in a strong showing at Friday Night Lights, so it looked like he was in line to be the No. 2 regardless of Gallarda's presence. Coffman is the better receiver, Gallarda is/was the better blocker.
Best of luck to him. Let's hope the injuries stay minimal going forward.
