Lamar Holmes To Ride The Pine In 2013?

Daniel Shirey

It was widely assumed that Lamar Holmes would be the starting right tackle this year, because he was a third round pick just a year ago and the Falcons were comfortable letting Tyson Clabo go. It was--and still is--my prediction for the season.

Mike Johnson is making things interesting early, though. The AJC reports that the starting offensive line thus far has consisted of Sam Baker, Justin Blalock, Peter Konz, Garrett Reynolds and MJ at RT. You can take a mini-camp depth chart with a grain of salt, but it's clear that Johnson is going to get a real shot at starting outside.

Johnson had a great reputation as a run-blocker coming out of college, where Lamar Holmes was viewed as a better pass protector, albeit one with some footwork concerns. A Johnson/Reynolds right side of the line has a chance to be pretty effective blocking up front for Steven Jackson, at least.

I remain convinced that Holmes and his towering talent will eventually win this battle, but he's got some stiff competition in Johnson. Who do you think will start at right tackle?
