2013 NFL Draft Results: Atlanta Falcons select Stansly Maponga

The Atlanta Falcons selected Texas Christian's Stansly Maponga with the No. 153 pick of the 2013 NFL Draft. Maponga is ranked as the No. 176 overall player by SB Nation's Dan Kadar.

"Trader Thomas" Dimitroff traded with the Bears to move up 10 spots to draft Maponga, sending the No. 163 and 236 overall picks to Chicago. The 22-year-old defensive end chose to forgo his final year of eligibility to enter this year's draft.

Maponga is a versatile player with a quick first step and solid power rushing off the edge. He displayed his impressive upper-body strength by benching 30 reps at the NFL Combine, which blends well with his short-area speed.

After redshirting his freshman year, Maponga became a full-time starter in 2010. In 36 games played with the Horned Frogs, he recorded 113 total tackles, 23 tackles for loss and 15.5 sacks. His sophomore campaign was by far his best.

A few details on his background. He was born in Zimbabwe and moved the the U.S. at age 9. He left school early, despite being advised to stay for another year. Maponga has a young daughter, so family was likely the most important factor in that decision.

At 6'2, 256 pounds, he could be able to contribute as a linebacker. He was strictly a defensive end in TCU's 4-2-5 defense. Like Malliciah Goodman, he's another player with great arm length (34.125 inches).

Maponga needed foot surgery back in March. He missed two games in 2012 from that injury. His passing rushing moves need to improve, but again, the upside is there. He's already at the top of his physical potential. Now the Falcons can work with him attacking off the edge.

Maponga was the second-best pass rusher on the Big 12's, like, only good defense. Also his name is Stansly.
