Atlanta Falcons Slotted for Third Overall Pick

After this weekend the Falcons are tied for the worst overall record in the NFL. That may not sound great but every bad season is followed by hope. Where is this hope? Let me announce that we have arrived at Clowntown, everyone, and the population is your Atlanta Falcons.

This morning Dave glossed over the fun stuff of having an awful team.  That fun stuff being your new savior is coming to Atlanta.  Yes, throw away your Peria Jerry jersey and get ready to replace it with one of the top college players available in the 2014 NFL draft.

I probably don't have to tell you about what Thomas Dimitroff has previously done with top picks but it feels good to do it anyways.  Matt Ryan was selected third overall and Julio Jones was picked sixth overall.  Not bad.  Can we threepeat?

Currently the only two win teams are the Houston Texans, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Minnesota Vikings and the Atlanta Falcons.  However, the Vikings tied this weekend because Christian Ponder is terrible and is considered behind Atlanta.  The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have surged to three wins, which may be a franchise record.

The tie-breaker here is strength of schedule.  The Texans and Jaguars have played teams with worse records, giving them a weaker strength of schedule.  Therefore, Atlanta comes in third in the battle for the top pick.

The positive here is the teams in contention have the aforementioned Ponder as well as Josh Freeman, Matt Cassel, Blaine Gabbert, Chad Henne, Case Keenum and Matt Schaub as their quarterbacks.  All these passers are terrible.  Mike Glennon is showing a little promise, but either way, these teams will be falling over themselves to get a chance at the top quarterbacks.

That leaves Atlanta with the very likely possibility of drafting the best non-quarterback of the entire draft class.  Yes, that means Dimitroff has his pick of Jadeveon Clowney, Anthony Barr, Johnny Manziel or Jake Matthews, who are considered some of the top picks in the draft.

Any of those players would be a great addition to a team that should be healing up and ready to make another playoff run in 2013.
