With Julio Jones out for the year and Roddy White still hobbled by injuries, Harry Douglas is suddenly more important than ever. It remains to be seen what role he will play going forward. Right or wrong, the Falcons brass isn't convinced moving Douglas outside is the right call.
Head coach Mike Smith was asked about Douglass remaining inside as a slot receiver.
"I think as a coaching staff, we’ve got to put everybody in the best position," Smith said. "Obviously, I think we’ll see some multiplicity in what we want to do with our wide receivers. This is a unique situation that we’re dealing with right now. You’ve got to be multiple. And that’s what we’ll try to do."
Headcoachsaywhat?! I'm not sure I follow Smitty there. I'm thinking he's saying this: the Falcons offense, particularly the wide receiving corps, is about to get a lot more dynamic. By that I don't mean they will be a formidable bunch. If anything, we'd be lucky if they were passable. By that I think he means the Falcons will need their receivers to be versatile and adaptable, capable of playing inside, outside, and upside down if need be.
