Tony Gonzalez May Retire Without Super Bowl WIn

Rob Carr

We'll have plenty to talk about in the next few days, but the fact that Tony Gonzalez may have ended his career without a Super Bowl berth certainly matters.

I don't want to be the guy to call your attention to the worst storylines, but you can't help but notice that after a proud 16 year career and an amazing 2012 season, Gonzalez is "95% sure" he's going to retire at minimum. If he does, he'll have gotten that elusive playoff win, but not a Super Bowl victory. It's undoubtedly a tough pill to swallow for Gonzo.

The Falcons played one hell of a tough game here, and Gonzo was brilliant throughout. It's not his fault the Falcons walked away from this home game with a heartbreaking, narrow loss to the 49ers. He played his heart out. The Falcons played their hearts out. Sometimes it doesn't work.

If this is truly it for the Gonzalez, we'll send him out in style in the coming days and weeks. For now, my heart kind of breaks for him.

Of course, there's always the chance that Tony doesn't hang it up after this season. All we can do is hope he comes back for another shot at the Super Bowl.

Your thoughts on Gonzo's season and 2012 in general?
