The Falcons made their first round of cuts today. No real surprises.
The Atlanta Falcons today announced that they have waived tight end Chase Coffman, linebacker Max Gruder, kicker Erik Folk, running back Richard Medlin, fullback Lee Meisner, defensive end Louis Nzegwu, wide receiver Kenny Stafford, and tight end Aron White. The Falcons have also placed tackle Will Svitek on injured reserve and reached injury settlements with defensive tackle Elisha Joseph and cornerback Darrin Walls.
Walls is a talented kid. He might have competed for fifth cornerback. Interestingly, the 3rd string tight end competition just got a little tighter. Not a critical spot on the roster, but a battle we've been watching nonetheless.
Keep in mind, this isn't the cut down most fans salivate over. The Falcons will take it down to 53 players by August 31st. These 8 players were on their way out the door weeks ago. But you have to have camp bodies, and that's what these guys were. I'm sure it was a thrill for them, but to be frank, none of these guys have a future in the NFL. I'd love to see Walls and Svitek get healthy in the years ahead though.
