It's Quizz Time

Josh D. Weiss-US PRESSWIRE

Over the past few weeks we've seen an emergence of Jacquizz Rodgers into an expanded role. The Falcons appear to be set on giving Quizz the ball more often, and his teammates and coaches seem to feel confident about what he brings to the table.

Last week Quizz was in for 32 of the Falcons 59 offensive snaps against the Saints. Michael Turner? He played just 20 snaps. Rodgers also played eight more snaps against the Buccaneers in the week prior.

As DOL writes, Quizz "probably is the quietest Falcon". He doesn't run his mouth. He doesn't complain about his playing time. He just goes about his business the same way each day.

"There are a lot of things I'm impressed with by him, but I think his effort is really good," quarterback Matt Ryan said. "For a smaller guy, he's strong, he's physical, he's shifty, he's non-stop and he's relentless."

From what it sounds like, the entire offensive unit believes Quizz can continue to make a bigger impact as the season progresses.

"At this point, that's what we've come to expect from him," left guard Justin Blalock said. "Every day, we see him do those sorts of things. We know that he's a special back."

Tyson Clabo also talked about Quizz being a special player, and Mike Smith himself always like what he sees. Last week Rodgers averaged 5.4 yards per carry, and the week before against Tampa he he finished with a 4.9 YPC mark. Not too bad for a back critics constantly question for his size.

Turner is banged up this week. He's been limited in practice every day, which likely means we will see him in action on Sunday. However, his ailing elbow should boost Quizz's role even more, and considering how bad Carolina's run defense is this season, he could be in for a career day.

He still sits in the No. 2 spot on the depth chart, but we know we're going to be seeing a lot more of Quizz going forward. His improved play bodes well for his chances to make an impact in the playoffs as well. It's comforting to know the Falcons don't have to wear down Turner each game now. He doesn't need to carry the ball 20+ over and over. Quizz provides a change of pace, and another playmaker in the Atlanta offense.
