Matt Bosher, Punter And Unsung Hero

One of the NFL's best punters has flown under the radar this season.

Offensive linemen and punters are two guys you don't want standing out on the field. If they're doing their job well, you shouldn't think about them.

Matt Bosher has accomplished that this year far better than the line.

Bosher's numbers are not eye-popping, but it's hard to argue against him being one of the 10 or 12 best punters in the NFL today. His net average is seventh in the league, tenth in return yards, 14th in total yards, and 12th in punts inside the 20. He's been an excellent weapon for the Falcons thus far, in short, and reliable enough that he comes out and does his business without the fanbase exploding in rage.

In any other year, that might not be worth an entire article of celebration, but it is this year. The Falcons have struggled with field position all year thanks to an anemic return game and a few brain farts on that end. The only way they're winning the field position battle is by pinning opposing offenses deep, and Bosher has been awfully good for that. Just over half his punts have even been returned, according to Daniel Cox at the mothership.

It speaks well for Bosher, a guy who was enemy number one for fans during the first half of last season. I hope we'll continue to see this level of excellence.

What do you think of Bosher's season thus far?
