Enough with the penalties. You're professionals. Get it together.

During the 2010 season, we averaged 3.8 penalties a game. No team averaged less penalties a game. This year we're averaging 6.2 penalties a game. For those of you keeping count, we rank 15th league-wide. It's an enormous jump, and while we're decidedly middle-of-the-pack, this is something we can and should fix.

In case you're wondering, this isn't a home versus away issue. We're averaging 5.8 penalties a game at home and 6.5 penalties a game when playing away. We've improved marginally over the last three games - averaging 5.3 penalties a game - but last week was particularly bad (when we accrued 7 penalties).

Here's the bottom line: we're not stout enough to have this many mental lapses. Detroit, Oakland, San Francisco, Dallas, Chicago, and Denver average more penalties than we do. What does that tell you? Simple. It's possible to have a passable season while accruing a lot of penalties. But if your offense is the 13th most efficient in the league, then you need to keep your composure when it counts.

Is it just me, or have the Falcons penalty-ridden ways frustrated the you-know-what out the rest of you this season? Discuss!
