Huh?
Sorry that's not more eloquent, but it is the first thing that comes to mind when I see the news that Robert James has been re-signed. You may remember James from his greatest hits album, which includes crowd pleasers like "Zero Career Tackles" and "Suspended Four Games For Violation Of NFL's Substance Abuse Policy." At first glance, this move is a little baffling.
Ultimately, I come back to the faith I have in Thomas Dimitroff and Mike Smith to explain this. If the Falcons like the guy enough to bring him back after he's doing virtually nothing for three seasons, alright. I'm sure they think the dude can offer something as a backup linebacker, and they might be high enough on his potential to view him as more than that by 2012.
While we don't have financial terms yet, there's no reason to believe this will be anything more than a low-risk signing to bolster think linebacking depth. I think the Falcons can and should aim higher in free agency and the draft, but again, benefit of the doubt for a guy with undeniable physical talent. I'm just still a bigger fan of Spencer Adkins.
Thoughts?
