It's getting to the point where you wonder if Matt Bryant is even coming back to the Falcons in 2010.
The latest erosion of his platform comes in the form of Rob Maver, a University of Guelph kicker—yes, seriously—who recently signed with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League. The strong-legged Maver is probably a longshot for a roster spot, but the Falcons already have Steve Hauschka signed and have been trying out promising young legs all off-season. It's not a particularly good sign for Bryant, a terrific person but an aging kicker.
Interestingly enough, Maver also has a punting pedigree. If he could do both successfully, it might be worth keeping him around as a versatile option in case the unthinkable happens again and the Falcons are forced to turn to Kroy Biermann for kicking duties. But probably not.
What really blows me away about this is that Maver shares his Guelph alumni status with....Thomas Dimitroff. Yes, little did I know that the Comrade once spoke of Bolshevik policies and played safety for the schools' football team. Check it out if you don't believe me.
