This is a series of firsts.
Before we get to that, the Eagles lead the all time series (including postseason) 16-11-1. What I mean by firsts is that the Falcons and Eagles played in the first Falcons game ever, a 9-7 loss back in 1966. The Eagles were the first road opponent for the Birds later that season, the second official game, a 23-10 loss in Philly.
The next first was the first ever Falcons playoff game in 1978, a 14-13 victory for the Birds on Xmas Eve in Atlanta, a come from behind affair after being down most of the game, when Steve Bartkowski leading the Birds to victory with two scores in the final five minutes, in a rain soaked game. It was a lot of fun!
The next first was the first game in the GeorgiaDome in the 1992 preseason, a 20-10 Falcons victory. Ok, enough of that. The series had been closely contested for the most part, with one OT game, and the 1980 game in Philly, in which the Falcons won, 20-17 to secure home field advantage throughout the playoffs, which as would turn out, didn't do them any good.
The last time the Birds won in Philly was 1988, when Chris Miller lead a comeback for a 27-24 victory over the future NFC East Champs. Since then, however, only three victories for the Birds, who led this series at one time years ago.
Something's got to give this weekend, the Falcons 20+ year streak of not winning in Philly, or the Eagles winning at home for the first time this season. This is Bird Bowl 2 this week! This series has been fun and frustrating, to say the least.
Next week, the Bengals.
