Why? The Atlanta Falcons exuberantly select LaRon Landry with the #8 pick.
I've made no secret over the last month or so about my creepy man crush on Landry. Well before the draft, I had discussed Reggie Nelson's merits as a first pick for us as well, but after some more research I came to one conclusion.
The Atlanta Falcons need LaRon Landry.
He's a dealbreaker at safety, and a freakish specimen physically. He runs a 4.37 40, has an insane 37.5 inch vertical leap, and though he's prone to the occasional error in judgment, he's got a great mind for coverage, terrific hands, and he takes solid angles on tackles. The Falcons have been so bad at safety for years that I was calling up friends at the beginning of the season to tell them we signed the ancient Lawyer Milloy. But it all changes today, my friends. Today we get a guy who barring a Pac Man type meltdown or injuries is going to be one of the league's premier safeties for many years.
In the end, that was just too much for me to pass up.
