My Dreams Crushed As Dolphins Draft Jake Long

My hopes and prayers have not been answered. The Dolphins will pick Jake Long first overall, throwing the rest of the draft in question.

I'll be updating this later tonight, but for now, discuss.

Update [2008-4-22 23:31:45 by Dave the Falconer]: Okay, I'm still depressed about this. There are some Falcons fans out there who would like Ryan, but if Long and Dorsey go off the board 1-2, most of us aren't going to be happy. Chris Long simply isn't a realistic option for this team, but at this point Dimitroff ought to make noise about taking anybody he can to try to find a trade partner. I'd much rather be taking Sedrick Ellis at #8 than Matt Ryan at #3.

Realistically, though, if we're stuck at 3 then the Falcons are probably going to seriously consider Ryan. He's going to cost a ton of money and I don't particularly want him, but I will support his skinny Bawston self to the ends of the earth if we draft him. I'd just hate to have to put that to the test.

Dorsey
I just hope this doesn't mean that Dorsey goes to the Rams...

I feel like if there's no good trade partner, and Dorsey is gone, we might actually draft Matt Ryan at #3.  Ick.  I felt dirty just typing that.

Keep hope alive
let's just hope that the Ravens really like Matt Ryan and make a move to #2.

If not, they can pick Chris Long and we pick b/t Dorsey and Ryan (I have Ryan at 60% to be the pick).

Sorry
We like him, but we don't like him THAT much.  shudder

St. Louis had better take Chris Long!!!
If they take Dorsey we're gonna be in a pickle.  We are mortgaging our future with the 3rd pick, so we have to get an impact player.
If the Ravens don't trade up maybe the Jets would trade with us for D-Mac.  At the 6th spot I'd feel A LOT better about drafting Ryan, Ellis, Clady, or Albert.

Ryan
I have word from a very reliable source that if the Falcons draft Matt Ryan, I will get really drunk due to shame and sorrow.

There is a positive spin that could be placed on a Matt Ryan selection; if we as falcons fans represent the majority opinion, then almost no Falcons fans (I haven't seen a single comment on this site in favor of drafting Ryan)want the team to pick the Matty Ice (I HATE THIS NICKNAME).  This disdain and dissapointment would surely be a hot topic for the local media, which could potentially light a fire under Matt's ass and cause him to overacheive and actually be...good.

Do I beleive that jet stream of bullshit that just spewed from my keyboard? Of course not, but at least its something to cling to in the event we do draft Matt "I wish I had Nolans arm" Ryan..

I told you I had a bad feeling about this...
I have to believe that somewhere someone important has read enough fan feedback, commentary, posts, threads, blogs, journals, diaries, whatever, to know that the majority of Falcons fans do not want Matt Ryan.  I have to believe that the Comrade is smarter than to draft a QB so high in the draft just from looking at his past experiences in NE.  I have to believe that the talks with Dorsey are legitimate and are signs of what we will be doing come the third 15 minutes of the draft.  I have to believe.  I have to because if I don't then I have no reason to be a fan.

And after stating this, I have already made my decision of where I will stand after that third pick.  I will either be overflowing with joy and ready for a wonderful future, or I will turn off the TV and walk out my back door, down to the pond behind my house, and just keep walking until I can't breathe anymore.

Ok, maybe I won't go that far, but I sure as hell will have lost all hope in upper management and their ability to fix this team.  So, I want to believe; nay, I am trying to believe; scrath that, I am a believer.  Well, at least until Saturday anyways.  Then I'll just play it by pick.

Chiefs might be the new player
they now have the ammo to make a move and get Ryan (who they were apparently hot for) and still have a pick in round one to get a lineman to protect him and block for LJ.

Out of all the teams
who might be interested in moving up, the Chiefs are the most thrilling prospect. The way they typically draft, I wouldn't be surprised if they were giving away some picks.

OR
Perhaps with Kanas holding that extra pick now, maybe Baltimore starts getting a little nervous about ending up with Ryan at 8 (assuming ATL doesn't take him) and is encouraged to jump up a few spots...

Orrr
Kansas City swaps us 1st, 4th and Brodie Croyle to move up for Matt Ryan.

Whether that's a good move depends entirely on your opinion of Croyle, though.

Croyle
I lived in Huntsville, AL for his entire college career.  I watched him get sacked...a lot...and there were many times he got sacked by phantom defensive players; i.e. there was no one on him, he just fell to the ground anticipating the sack, curled up in a ball and probably cried a little inside that helmet of his.  Some might argue he had a decent arm on him, but I would argue that his WR's made some of the most ridiculous catches bailing him out and making him look like a hero.

Seriously, look at that Prothro(sp?) catch that was ESPN's Pontiac Game Changing play of the year a couple years ago.  That was a sick catch.  I'll give Croyle the benefit of having the strength to put that ball down the field the way he did, but he was entirely inconsistent in college and has been thus far in the Pro's.

Now, that doesn't mean I would be opposed to what you have mentioned Dave.  Swapping the first, gainig a fourth and Croyle would be well worth it in my opinion.  If I had to ammend it, I would suggest a third over the fourth and either keeping Croyle in it or dropping him from it, depending on how bad they want that #3 pick.  In the very least I would definitely play Baltimore and KC off each other on draft day.

"Baltimore? Yeah, this is ATL, we seem to have this pick here and KC sure is claiming they will take Ryan.  The ball is in your court, wanna play?"
