Hall to Raiders

[editor's note, by Dave the Falconer] If this goes down, I'll be kind of pissed that the Giant/Falcon trade didn't work out. On the other hand, if DeAngelo Hall wanted a new place to work, he couldn't have picked a more abso-f'n-lutely insane place to go than Oakland. Good luck out there, you slightly less than elite corner.

And here's SG Standard and the diary I have promoted to the front page. Use this as a leaping off point for Hall discussion.

Update [2008-3-15 22:39:20 by Dave the Falconer]:The AJC, God bless it, is now reporting that the deal would include a second and sixth round pick. That makes the deal a little better, especially if the rumors of David Irons looking plenty capable are true.

Sorry to jack your diary, SG.

We get their second rounder, pending Hall agreeing to a contract.

Personally, im a little dissappointed. I think he needed to be traded, especially if he was serious about not returning, but I thought we would be getting more for him. He is regarded as one of the top tier corners in the league. That is something that is hard to come by. I don't think you can get equal value for that in the second round. I think that if a second round pick is the centerpiece coming our way, there should be at least one more mid round pick also. To me, this signals that they are going to go with somebody like Brohm or Flacco with one of the two second rounders and draft for line help in the first round.

A couple more points
I agree that Hall is slightly less than elite, but he is perceived as being more. Hence, the Falcons probably could have wrangled a little more out of Oakland. Also, gaining another second rounder gives the Falcons the flexibility to trade back up into the first round if something unexpected happens. I doubt they will do that, but acquiring this pick does open up options.

But seriously....
Alright.  Hall to the Raiders blah blah.  The real question for SG Standand: Do you mean "SG Standard" as in the Gibson SG Standard?

flabbergasted
Why would the Raiders do this?  What are they smoking?  They have two elite corners in Nmandi Asomugha, and Fabian Washington.  Thats two.  That and RB are the only strong points of that team.  I can't imagine DeAngelo Hall willing to stay in Oakland either, they're the worst run team in the NFL.  Now Atlanta will likely go for a corner in the second round, just above my beloved Baltimore, and Oakland will simply walk around with three good corners, and canyons on both their offensive and defensive lines.  Oakland was 31st against the run, and just lost their best run-stuffer in Warren Sapp.

I'm speechless.  It seems you dont even like the trade that much, meaning I can't even congratulate you.

Al Davis Is Insane
This reminds me of an earlier post of mine where I question Al Davis' senility.  If this trade goes through and it isn't part of some other deal that Davis is plotting, let the record state that he is totally fucking insane.

If true, good riddance
I thought, too, that they could get more than a 2nd rounder (albeit 34th pick).  Although his reputation probably hurt his value, we're talking OAKLAND here!  Geez.

Hall was a selfish cancer on the team, regardless.  From a cost/benefit "value" perspective, I think that the Falcons could easily be better off with a good draft selection.  With all the trouble MeAngelo made, he's not worth all that money.  The ESPN article said he got just less than Samuel got from PHA (6 years, $57M total, $20M guaranteed).  One more year and we might have gotten nothing for him.

I can't see them passing on a 2nd round QB now, either.  Agree that Brohm or Flacco would be great values.  One of those guys will almost certainly be available.

Evaluating college talent was Comrade Dimitroff's old job, wasn't it?  This draft is starting to get pretty interesting.

I feel better
This sixth rounder gives the Falcons four of the first 49 picks as well as six on the second day. For a team that has so many holes to fill, you couldnt ask for much else.

Better, indeed
Getting the 6th rounder does feel a lot more warm & fuzzy than just the 2nd round pick.  Absolutely a great thing for a rebuilding team to stockpile those draft picks, isn't it?  I think they have eleven total picks now.  Draft wisely, Comrade...

And I still don't like it.
Even though we did get two picks for Hall, I don't think they are what they could have been had we actively shopped him before all of the free agent CB signings.  And although some of the moves that have been made thus far I don't agree with, this one isn't too bad.  At least we didn't simply sut him like we did Crumpler and Coleman.  I just wish it had been a first and a late rounder, or the second and another one in the third or fourth.

BUT, I do agree that Al Davis is f'ing crazy and unless they plan on pushing one of those three to SS or FS, he should immediately be removed, as he is severely crippling that team year after year.  There has to be some form of hostile corporate takeover that could be done to ursup the tyranny with which Al Davis reigns down upon all Raider fans.  I work with a guy who is a Raiders fan.  Needless to say, the rest of us get to laugh a lot at his expense.
