Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

A Tuesday Spin Around The Division

A look at what's going on around the division, SBNation style, as presented by your fearless blogger:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers JScott is breaking one of the Football Fan Commandments; specifically, the one that says thou shalt not covet thy division mate's tight end. Yes, I know it sounds gay, but that hasn't stopped him from calling for Alge Crumpler. The worst part is that he isn't alone; it seems every team in the division is going to take a shot at him. That'll make the homecoming a little tough.

There's also some interesting discussion over there on whether or not Crumpler is an overrated tight end, with a poster leaning heavily on Football Outsiders to make his point. I would disagree because of his blocking skills and the fact that last year basically torpedoed his career averages, but there's no denying that Alge's injuries are going to scare some teams away. I'm still wishing him luck.

To come back to the Bucs in particular, JScott is really advocating for the team to bring in some strong offensive options. While noting that Jeff Garcia played reasonably well next year, I'd point out that any offensive overhaul over there should start with a new QB. One of these years, that cheerful former Canadian player is going to break down, and it's not going to matter if the Bucs bring in Coles and Crumpler.

And plus, the Bucs still suck.

Carolina Panthers: Next stop, Cat Scratch Reader, where Jaxon examines the possibility of prodigal wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad returning. Jaxon calls the potential move "a step backward," and it's not hard to understand why. The Panthers have Steve Smith, Dwayne Jarrett and a score of fringe value guys. The last thing they need is an elderly possession receiver, which is why I'm openly advocating that the Panthers go out and get Muhammad. It would also be nice if they gave Steve Smith to the Falcons. Consider it? No?

Damn you.

The Panthers have also recently cut chronically concussed linebacker Dan Morgan, whom the Falcons should definitely avoid. If Kris Jenkins was available for a song, I'd say he might be a good veteran option to fill out our weak defensive tackle corps. As he's likely to cost much more than I'd like to pay, I'll say pass. Then, of course, Jaxon would be thrilled to get Alge Crumpler. Great.

New Orleans Saints Sunil from Canal Street Chronicles is...well, no one really knows where the hell he is. Can I get an Amber Alert?

A cursory read about the Interwebs tells me that the Saints are actively pursuing Dan Morgan (why?) and devising new ways to avoid saying that Reggie Bush is an overrated player. A few personnel tweaks in the offseason would make them the scariest team in the NFC South again, though, so I think I'll leave that one alone.

Question of the day: Which NFC South team is Crumpler most likely to sign with?

i'm gonna go out on a limb and say
the BUCS will sign ALGE CRUMPLER to a fantastic 4 year deal and that will be all she wrote.. no bias there, nope, none at all!!

And Dave, the Bucs have a QB, his name is Jeff "Old Man Rugged" Garcia, get used to him, as the Bucs are looking to extend his contract this off-season

Sunil
No longer writes for the Canal Street Chronicles, due to time constraints, and the fact that he is really a Rams fan.

He was living a lie?!

Yes and no
He and I matriculated together at THE Tulane University.  While there, a great number of my friends (including Sunil) developed an affinity for the Saints, especially after Katrina.  Sunil was and still is however, a die hard Rams fan.

Now I know
Good thing you stayed a Falcons fan, gentle Hamburger.

That does explain why I've seen him haunting St. Louis Cardinals sites, though.

Dirty Secret
Alright, now I have to confess.  I am a lifelong Cowboys fan. They are "my team" as it were.  Here is the odd part though.  Living in ATL I have become REALLY found of the Falcons.  In fact I actually follow the Falcons WAY more closely than I do the Cowboys.

In fact with all the success the Cowboys had and how bad the Falcons did, I found myself actually caring more about the Falcons this year than the 'Boys.  One main reason being the good olf Falcoholic site!  I have never posted and rarely visit Blogging the Boys though I suspect I will when the big SB Nation changes happen and our accounts go universal.

I remain loyal to the Falcons though.  My Cowboys fandom actually stems from me being obsessed with then for much of my life, it's part of my DNA now.  That being said, my wife and my 8 year old daughter insist that I am more of a Falcs fan than a Cowboys fan.  I don't know.  All I know is that I love the Falcons.

Signed,

Gasp!
It's like I don't even know you any more.

To be fair, though, I'm not a Georgia native. I have, for whatever reason, been a Falcons fan since I was about three or four years old, despite having only one family member hailing from Atlanta. Call it fate (I'd prefer that), but I've loved this team ever since despite the often depressing finishes, and the win over the Vikings ten years ago ranks as one of the greatest moments of my life.

I guess every fan has an interesting history, eh?

Kitty Cats or ???
the Panth-Hers really need someone who can take advantage of the space that Smith creates underneath.  plus, Alge's a Carolina guy...HS, then college at UNC.  I see a 3-year deal in the future for Alge.  The darkhorse IMO is the Seahawks.  They would love a pass catching TE in that offense, plus a bit of history with their 2009 coach.

I've heard Alge wants to stay in the division
If he decides not to, though, you have to figure the Seahawks are the front-runners. With Branch and Hackett chronically injured, they could use all the help they can get.

Crump to a rival division foe
This is the reason I made the post I did earlier about simply releasing a player instead of attempting to get some form of value in return.  In the very least, the team should have amde the attempt to trade him off to the AFC for a few picks or so, maybe toss in a role player to even it out.  It's the number one unwritten rule when dealing players that you never, NEVER, let your division rivals, much less your conference opponents, get any of your players.  That fact should be even more so when the player involved is someone of Crumplers value.

At this point, I have to seriously question the new GM and his tactics.

Also note that that I love me some Crump, so that plays a part in this struggle I am having with him being gone.  I hope the guy goes somewhere and simply rocks socks the rest of his career.  Hopefully somewhere in the AFC, haha!

Where will crump go?
I see Alge going to the Saints. I'm a Falcon fan since day one in 1966, but I'm not too hip on knowing all the positions. It seems to me that the Falcons and Saints  either trade or pick up each other's free angents. Personnally, I'd like to see him go to another Division, for he was one of my favorite Falcons and I wouldn't feel right seeing him in a Saints, Panthers or Tampa uniform. I wish you well Alge, if you go to another Division.
