Comings and Goings

According to the offical page, the Falcons have signed FB Ovie Mughelli and released LBs Ed Hartwell and Ike Reese.

None of this is particular surprising given the needs of this team, but the quickness with which Pet Rhino and crew found Mughelli was kind of impressive. He's the classic bulldozer of a fullback the coaching staff was hoping for, and they pounced on him right away. As much as I hated to see Griffith go, they got the right fullback for their system. Now it's on the running backs to get the job done behind him.

Ike Reese was a special teams guy with a lot of heart, but those guys are replacable. Ed Hartwell was a bit more puzzling, but the team really seemed to have soured on him following his injury prone seasons. This makes resigning Demorrio Williams that much more important, as the team's linebacking corps is suddenly a little lacking in depth. Free agency, perhaps?

Update [2007-3-2 20:31:44 by Dave the Falconer]: Michael Vick in an airport, the Mughelli deal is 6 years/ $18 million. The most ever given to a pure fullback, and perhaps the most nonsensical contract I can imagine. There's a good chance he's be valuable for all six years, but my god, he's only a fullback!
