Open Game Thread: Atlanta Falcons vs. San Fransisco 49ers

Who? Atlanta Falcons versus San Fransisco 49ers, 1:00 PM ET

Where? Georgia Dome, Atlanta, Georgia

Weather? Gloomy if the Falcons lose, bright if they win.

Fun Fact? These are two eerily similar teams on defense, allowing virtually the same number of yards. The Falcons do pile up more yardage on offense, though.

Injuries? Leftwich is out and so is Alge Crumpler, which is becoming a very concerning trend.

Odds? Atlanta over San Fran, 3.0, O/U 37.0

Foe? This could be a gruesome game, so be sure to check in on the opposition at Niners Nation for more information or something to read to calm your stomach.

Let's strike gold against these 49ers!

Update [2007-11-4 16:14:51 by Dave the Falconer]:: Extremely close win, but the Falcons would definitely have blown that game in the first half of the season. Please be kind and gracious to any Niners fans, as we know all too well what they're going through.

Gore is out
Allright.  I say this is a very winnable game.  Frank Gore won't be playing so that's a big plus for us.  LET'S DO THIS!!!!!!!!!
Let's matriculate the ball down the field boys.

Dunn just scored
So Dunn decided to kick ass on this last drive.  7-7.  So frustrating not being able to see the game even when you have the Sunday Ticket!  I am "watching" the game online through NFL Gamecenter which by the way is MUCH improved from last year.

It was all part of the NFL.com relaunch which I think kicked butt.

Let's matriculate the ball down the field boys.

This is like revenge day
Dunn and Mughelli both score after being incessantly mocked pretty much everywhere. You won't see me complaining.

At halftime
Boy, this is a battle of who can out-sorry the other.... and in that respect I guess we're losing.  Alex Smith appears to be doing his best Joey Harrington impression.  I'm so conflicted now because part of me wants us to win, but part of me knows that every game we win hurts our chance at the #1 pick.

Oh well, 14-7 lead at the half in a sloppy game.

What is wrong with this team in the second half?
They seem to come out incredibly flat every time. I don't get it.

Oh yeah, that's what's wrong
Bobby Petrino. Norwood still only has five carries and you're trying to dink and dunk it down the field. Ever heard of learning from your mistakes?

Once again..
Petrino is doing his best to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
Let's matriculate the ball down the field boys.

Neither team
Neither team appears to want to win this game.  Both teams keep trying to give it away to the other, but neither seems to want it.

And now Norwood is hurt
Return probable, but still....c'mon.

by Dave Choate on Nov 4, 2007 3:20 PM EST reply actions

The officials?!?
How in the HELL did they miss the face mask on Norwood?!  The defender nearly took his head off!

by Nusm on Nov 4, 2007 3:21 PM EST up reply actions

Annoying problem
The officiating usually ranges between bad and awful. Hopefully Norwood didn't suffer any permanent damage.

I should note
In the interest of fairness, I think there's good crews and bad crews out there. Your bad crews can either call too many or too little, but either way both teams usually end up getting screwed.

Joey Harrington scrambles!
That was the second most inspiring thing I've ever seen.

Joey Scrambles...
He just looked faster because he gained an hour last night. :^)

by Nusm on Nov 4, 2007 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

Well said
Maybe they'd better set his clocks back 8 hours every time he goes to sleep.

No Vick Mention... I'm shocked
"...Joey Harrington's not going to make anyone forget about Fran Tarkington."

I was expecting the first obligatory mention of Michael Vick this week, but it didn't come.

Amazing stop
This defense gets all the credit in the world from me. Now let's actually give them a comfortable lead to work with.

And for anyone who asks
The Lions are doing exactly what I complained the Pats were doing: leaving their starters in too long and continuing to run up the score. It's now 38-0, Detroit, and the Broncos are without Jay Cutler.

I might be rethinking
This whole "good riddance to DeAngelo Hall" thing. If he could just learn to love us....

by Dave Choate on Nov 4, 2007 3:59 PM EST reply actions

And it's sloppy, terrible, awful
And they win it! Say what you want about it, but a win in this case is mercifully a win.

Alex Smith
Out-Harringtoned Harrington. I wonder if the 49er fans will blame that on injury?

Norwood hurt + Dunn gains a 100= Dunn the rest of the season. 27 carries to get that 100 isn't that impressive but he's got my respect for the way he knows when to get down and when to give a shot. I can't fault Norwood for that injury. I hope it's not severe or he's gonna be tagged as injury prone.

Would like to know what Hall told Blank when he handed him that ball...He didn't have to do much on those INTs. He could have called for a fair catch...I'm torn between wishing for some kind of miracle reconciliation between the organization and Hall and trading him. Those INTs will help his stats as far as trade value goes though...

2 of the players I've been down on this year, Brooking and Milloy both played better. I'll have to see what formation Brooking's sack came from though. He's always been a decent pass rusher. A good MLB would allow him, and especially Boley, be better players on the outside. The D has kept the Falcons in every game except one. So I'll give them credit.

Petrino's play calling was better this game. I actually liked the pass call on 3rd and 1, but Harrington wasn't gonna allow Smith to play worse then him and threw a 5 yard pass short...Smith was able to throw an interception after that though...
