Draft Team to Watch: KC Chiefs

As we all know, TD is likely to trade up on draft day. We fans always think, "hey, trade back and get more picks," but that is not TD's MO. So as I take a look at the draft order, the question becomes, "what team would be the Falcons trade partner?" The likely answer: the Chiefs.

In order for a trade to happen, both teams need to find value in the trade. So what value would the Falcons find in trading up four spots? The three teams being jumped would be: Cowboys, Packers, and Steelers. All three of these teams are offensive powerhouses, and also three teams that will be looking to bolster their defenses during the draft. (Sound familiar?!) It is easy to envision a scenario where some Defensive stud Falcon draft target is available at the Chiefs' draft spot, but this player is also someone who is probably high on the draft boards of the Cowboys, Packers, and Steelers.

If it makes sense that the Falcons could find value in moving up four spots, then how do the Chiefs find value in trading back? The obvious answer is: to pick up more and/or better draft picks. But anytime a team trades back, there is a risk that the player they would have selected in their original draft position is no longer available at the later draft slot. In this particular case, the Chiefs can trade back four spots, pick up a draft pick, and still get the player - specifically, the offensive player, that they would have selected had they stayed put. This is because the four teams that they would be letting draft in front of them - ATL, Dallas, GB, Pittsburg - don't really need a lot of offensive help.

The Chiefs may be a huge key to the Falcons' draft success; I will be watching them closely.
