The Falcons have waived wide receiver Darius Johnson. No details are currently available on the reason for this move, which will surely come as a surprise to many.
Johnson had an opportunity to contribute on the field last season with injuries to Roddy White and Julio Jones depleting the receiving corps. With Drew Davis on the PUP list following foot surgery, this move is pretty unexpected. It certainly makes the competition during training camp for depth at wide receiver a little more interesting.
An injury might be the cause of the transaction. While Johnson likely isn't a future Pro Bowl candidate, he did show some potential in 2013. Plus, the Falcons aren't exactly stacked at receiver past their top three.
Bernard Reedy looks to benefit from another receiver out of the picture. Courtney Roby is still in the mix, but his skills will likely stick to special teams.
We will update this story as more details become available. In the meantime, weigh in--what do you think about this news? What does this mean for depth at the receiver position? Why do you think Johnson was waived, and who you think has the best shot of catching on this preseason?
