It's the weekend, and because training camp is less than two weeks away, it's time to start thinking in earnest about that byproduct of camp: Roster cuts.
Many of you have asked me who I thought the Falcons would sign this summer, but I've been reluctant to give an answer because I don't know who will be cut. For the purposes of our discussion here today, we're going to do our best guesswork.
The best reason to do so? While the Falcons have to sign a couple of players to fill out their roster spots in the next few weeks, their best chance to find a contributor will likely come after cuts start trickling in.
That means players like Ace Sanders, the Jaguars' second-year slot receiver and part-time running back, could be available. Or Tommy Kelly, the veteran defensive tackle from New England. Or Jah Reid, the disappointing but still young guard from Baltimore. And so on.
For the purposes of this exercise, we're only choosing one. So I'm going to go with a man whose name has appeared once or twice on bubble lists around the NFL. He had a down year in 2013, but he's a reliable 28-year-old linebacker and a prolific tackler. Given the team's need for as much talent as possible at linebacker, I think he'd be able to offer something for the Falcons.
Your choice?
